We believe that living a life grounded in ethics and values is important. We believe that virtuous actions, done voluntarily, embed in all of us a sense of Individual Social Responsibility™ that helps us own social issues and work towards solutions.
We believe it is important to reach out and recognize Indians who display these qualities as it mainstreams the practice of Individual Social Responsibility™ in the national psyche as well as inspires the pursuit of a ‘Solid’ character in the community at large.
Our employee volunteers are recognized annually for imbibing the value of 'Living Responsibly'. The recognition takes place in the presence of their family members congregating for Picnic and Long Service Awards annually where we thank them for enabling us to deliver "more" to stakeholders.
For the community at large, two national awards have been created in the last decade to celebrate and reward volunteers as well as practitioners of Individual Social Responsibility™. Of these Apeejay India Volunteer Awards was India’s first and pioneering initiative celebrating Indians who volunteer, Corporates who promote employee volunteering and NGOs who engage Individuals who want to volunteer for social causes.
In 2014-15, under the Apeejay Karmayuga initiative, we scouted for Indians across the country who showed integrity and values in the moral and performance areas of their life and bestowed them with the coveted Karmaveer Chakra, instituted by our partner, iCONGO, in partnership with the UN in 2008. Under the initiative, joint awards were created with public, private and third sector organizations to recognize their stakeholders with a Karmaveer Chakra (Bronze) co-branded with the Partner. The National Jury selected Gold and Silver category winners from the bronze winners and individual applicants were scouted directly. The Award Ceremony took place on March 21, 2015 in New Delhi. In 2010- 2011, we created India’s first and pioneering initiative, Apeejay India Volunteer Awards, to celebrate and reward Indians who volunteer, Corporates who promote employee volunteering and NGOs who engage Individuals who want to volunteer for social causes.
In curating this in our Centennial year we were also taking forward Group’s employee volunteering program, named, ISR™, Individual Social Responsibility™ launched in 2007- 2008 based on our learnings from this program.

We had learnt that while volunteering keeps on happening in the background, it was completely absent from the mainstream national psyche and therefore there was nothing in India that celebrated volunteering spirit on a regional or a national level.
The Awards were thus created to inspire and encourage volunteering in Indians with a hope that such a promotion would promote its adoption by many many more.
In an attempt towards a 360 degree approach, the Award had three categories for Individuals, NGOs and Corporates with an additional Youth Volunteer for a person below 25 years of age added as a sub category in the Individuals Category.
Tremendous participaton was seen coming in from Pan India and from interiors of the country and ground level work which was as substantial as it was sustainable.
Our four 5-member Regional Juries and 4-member National Jury came together to judge applicants in each of the categories knowing fully well that they were like us charting hitherto unknown territory owing to the Awards pioneering nature in India. Rigorous day long sittings across Indian metros region wise over a month, many Pan India conference calls discussing doubts and setting Standard judging criteria brought forth 30 finalists.
The six National winners selected from these 30 finalists were Ram Sundher from Bangalore and Vaishnavi Srinivasan from Chennai for Individual Volunteer and Youth Volunteer of 2011 respectively, Nishtha and Operation Smile for NGOs that best engaged Volunteers and mJunction and HSBC for their impactful Employee Volunteering Programs. The Awards Ceremony saw every regional finalist or the National winner being awarded the same trophy to project each one as a Role Model. The National Winners additionally won cash awards.
It makes us very proud to see young Vaishnavi Srinivasan quitting her regular corporate job in Fidelity and join social work full time after she won the Individual Youth Volunteer Award. Ram Sundher went on to win a Life Time Achievement Award from a reputed Karnataka organization.
The eminent members of the Jury , The Paul family are committed to growing the scope and reach of the awards year on year.

Apeejay India Volunteer Awards 2011
Meaning : Rhythm ushers life in a groove of its own, uniquely carved for each individual and her/his movement that s/he executes. The trophy is designed to articulate the beat of life which turns our achievements into musical ensembles. The metallic twist and turns encapsulate the basic cadence and rhythmic pace of our work that we do in volition to keep the periodic balance of our share of the opposites. The good and the bad, the rich and the poor, the privileged and the deprived.

them know that they are the best and can do anything. She made them realize the importance of who

Md. Allauddin Sheikh
Md. Allauddin started his earnings as waste worker at a tender age of 13, when his father migrated
from Bangladesh in search of livelihood and finally took refuge in Kolkata. Alluaddin grew up in the
lanes of Kolkata and waste dumps by rag picking all day along with his mother. However, he was
enterprising and always dreamt to overcome his suffocating poverty and sufferings. He developed an
informal network of waste workers by which he could make better earnings for himself and his co-
workers by not falling prey in the hand of mid-agents. However, this still didn’t give him a
breakthrough for what he desired. He never craved for big money; mostly he desired was respect and
recognition. In year 2011, he joined SAFE’s Solid Waste Management Program titled, “Resolve
Trash2Cash’, and received training from SAFE, currently he is leading the waste segregation at source
campaign in the offices of Kolkata and carrying out the mammoth task of waste collection and disposal

few years the demand for plants have dropped considerably making the nursery communities most
vulnerable. Under his able leadership hundreds of youth who were drifting and migrating received
skill development training on ‘urban gardening’ and ‘vertical gardens’ and now has developed skilled
entrepreneurial groups that directly caters to the market demand for urban gardening and vertical
gardens. He continues to create win win situation by creating enhanced livelihood opportunities for
youth and reducing the urban heat island effect in the cities. He has pioneered in organizing the poor
youth creating new environmental leaders. His intense environmental leadership demonstrates

Farhana lives in Okhla slums of Delhi. She is a student of class 12th and has been making Tagore’s reproductions for last couple of years.
She is busy in making a series of PICTORIAL CALLIGRAPHS telling the stories of the heroines of Tagore and plans to exhibit her work in Delhi on the death anniversary of Tagore this year.
She has made a calligraph which shows the life of DAMINI from the story of CHATURANGA. Farhana tries to show the temperament and moods of Damini.
She also catches the details of her desires and frustration through this pictorial calligraph. She also experiments in Surrealisitic style by making a huge hand with huge fingers like dancing fire.
She has created and documented Sufi and Tagore stories through her creative style of painting to bring social change. She has also painted the female characters of films by eminent film director Mr. Shyam Benegal after watching his famous women oriented films.
She leads the art group and inspires other girls from their community to bring social change through arts.
Ms. Adeeba Saifi
Aseem Asha Foundation Karmaveer Chakra for Creating Social Change through the Medium of Art
Adeeba lives in Okhla slums of Delhi. She is a student of class 10th and has been making Tagore’s reproductions for last couple of years.
Adeeba shows story of a woman whose name is KUMUDNI from ‘JOGA-JOG’ written by Rabindranath Tagore.
Her pictorial calligraph shows a clash between two antipodal concepts of marital love & sex as represented by an affluent, Madhusudan and a very sophisticated, refined and sensitive 19 year old woman - KUMUDNI who firmly believes in Hindu ideals of womanhood and traditional concepts of wifehood.
Adeeba boldly chooses very vibrant but sophisticated colors to show the mood and temperament of KUMUDNI.
Her approach and tones are feminist because she also relates to the stories of Tagore with their surrounding which is male dominated and patriarchal in nature. Adeeba has created and documented Sufi and Tagore stories through her creative style of painting to bring social change.
She has also painted the female characters of films by eminent film director Mr. Shyam Benegal after watching his famous women oriented films. She leads the art group and inspires other girls from their community to bring social change through arts.
