PRESERVING TRADITIONS

014

17-year-old Mukta Karmakar, from Bankura, West Bengal, practices traditional casting (dhokra), a craft that is dying out because of mechanised processes. We saw an opportunity to build capacity to ensure that a craftsperson such as her could continue to pursue traditional craft. We funded her through the Delhi Crafts Council, with the objective of taking the economic pressures off her and encouraging her to follow her craft and thereby ensure a future generation of master craftsperson who can carry these fast-disappearing traditions into the future.
